Courtyard home for joint family

Photographer: Lester Rozario

Bengaluru-based architecture firm Kamat and Rozario designed a home around a courtyard for this family of four. Three blocks have been wrapped around a courtyard for this Bengaluru home, to create an inward-looking space. The courtyard becomes the heart of the house and also a constant source of light and ventilation even in the case of new constructions in the vicinity.

As a ‘prudent decision’, the potential space for a double bedroom was reserved on the ground floor and the rest of the house was built on stilts. To balance out the top-heavy form, the upper floors were realized in three separate forms, which were individualistic in material, shape, and form. The tallest block is placed at the back, while the other two give an illusion of cascading down the front. As per the client’s wish, sloping roofs were built that brought down the scale of the construction.
