Cantilevered staircase for Gurgaon residence

New Delhi-based architecture and design firm Gravity Design Studio has designed the Uppal Southend residence, located in Gurgaon. The client brief needed a design that reflected the three-generational family structure and the intense climactic conditions. The house is divided into public, semi-public and private spaces with neutral and warm colour palettes give an aesthetic feel.

Sprawled over an area of 3000 sq ft, the dwelling welcomes in light and air through openings only in the north and northwestern directions. A landscaped area with a functional driveway welcomes one in. The stilt floor is both a private parking space (for the client) and a small office for formal meetings. Huge openings on the ceiling on the front and rear façade minimize the use of artificial lighting and bring transparency into the rooms.

A linear façade is achieved by louvers and parapets, while the levels in the front elevation have been designed to break the monotony. Glass parapets with stone, warm-toned cladding and vertical louvers give a sophisticated vibe. The building massing appears to have only two floors on the exterior; the constructed portion on the terrace floor can be seen only upon exploring the superstructure.

An open and free-standing staircase with an elevator has been designed for the elderly members of the family. The cantilevered staircase ascends to the upper ground floor – which has a semi-public drawing room at the center. A modular kitchen is designed with cutting-edge technology, with a separate washing and storage space, and a puja room. A skylight acts as an atrium brightens up the room, with separate powder rooms for guests. The corridors have been treated with custom-made consoles and finishes.

The first floor has the master bedroom and the children’s bedrooms, each of them fitted with dressing space and washrooms. Each of these rooms is connected to a spacious balcony decorated with plants. They have been designed according to the inhabitants’ needs and personal style, primarily the back wall.

The terrace floor houses the guest bedroom with a private gymnasium and a terrace garden. The garden has a glass-enclosed sit-out beneath a bespoke pergola finishing a gazebo complete with lightweight cane furniture.
