Architects Work From Home: Des. Pankaj Poddar explores the new normal
“We have encouraged our team to upskill themselves using online courses that do not always pertain to work. We have also hosted sessions from industry experts on different topics, including mental health.”

The COVID-19 pandemic has adversely affected the architecture and design industry and has resulted in a delay in ongoing and future projects. No sourcing of materials, no physical inspection, and missed project deadlines in many cases have incurred huge losses. Today, we share the insights of Des. Pankaj Poddar, Co-founder, Hipcouch, Mumbai.
“The economy has crumbled as businesseses are suffering huge losses. As the interior design industry relies upon on-site work (both residential and commercial), our logistical operations have come to a halt. We see no labor or material movement and that translates into zero progress in terms of work.”
“Our residential and commercial clients have tight deadlines to get their work done so that the properties are inhabited soon. Due to the uncertain situation, deadlines have become fluid and clients are renegotiating their current leases. We have launched a video design consultation service for our clients, which offers the same experience as an in-person consultation meeting. Thus, clients can finalize designs, layouts, 3D views, cost estimates, and other detailed drawings before the commencement of on-site work.”
“We are trying to conserve capital as much as possible, as our budgets have pared down and are monitored regularly. We foresee a lag in the industry, and it will take additional time for us to resume work even after the travel restrictions get lifted. Labor migrants employed with us have left for their native towns, and it will take some time before work is resumed.”
“We have encouraged our team to upskill themselves using online courses that do not always pertain to work. We have also hosted sessions from industry experts on different topics, including mental health. Our clients understand the restrictions and have supported us, and we regularly evaluate cases of our vendors and consultants.”
